A Dowell prism is an image rotator, through which light passes and the image is reversed 180°. In addition, depending on the rotation Angle of the prism and the light incidence plane, the Dowell prism can rotate, inverted or reflect the image backward. When the prism is rotated on its optical axis, the rotation Angle of the image is twice the rotation Angle of the prism.
The Dowell prism can be thought of as a right Angle prism with the triangular tip removed, which can reduce the weight of the prism and the internal reflection of stray light.
